Frogs! Frogs! Frogs!
Hard to top yesterday’s hike, that combination of mental and physical exercise and breathtaking views is very rare. But the hike from Pontresina via Fuorcla Surlej to Murtél didn’t disappoint! Fortunately the snow had receded a bit so the pass was mostly clear, super easy to walk and navigate.
The first stretch from Pontresina station to Rosegg hotel is a good warm up, through a nice forest, mostly flat. A fine walk for a super foggy morning, not much to see anyway. It’s right after the hotel when the elevation kicks in – you basically do almost all of the elevation gain on a rather unforgiving stretch of 2,5km until you reach the pass. But it’s worth it – wonderful views again as you slowly ascend above the fog, as the sun comes into view and lights up the snowy peaks around you.
The pass itself held a little surprise, I had certainly not expected to encounter (live) frogs (the animal, French people are certainly more common) at this elevation. Crunchy or rather crispy frog, anybody?
Beautiful views again, feeling surrounded by snowy giants, with a beautiful tiny lake in the mix as well. The descent from Murtél offers great views as well. Rounded off the day with a good meal at Cresta Run restaurant.
