11 Almograve – Vila Nova de Milfontes
Home stretch! This was actually supposed to be shorter, but the ferry did not run (does not exist anymore) so we walked across the bridge at Milfontes after all. In a way, I was glad we did. Yes, it’s a few minutes with lots of cars passing you by (but safely separated, no worries), but you also get a beautiful view of the Rio Mira estuary from the „top“. Also, there’s some cool graffiti on the walls of an old villa which we would have missed as well.
We had been to Milfontes the year before, so we already knew the area, but hey, estuaries rock, right? Great view of the old fortress from the southbank of the river. And excellent weather again. We arrived quite early and had enough time to enjoy the lovely cafes. Highly recommend Lareu, great coffee and, baked goods, and vegetarian delights. „Pao cafe e companhia“ is also nice, but not quite as good. Plus Lareu has the much nicer location. 🙂 Dinner was at Adega 22 again, we’d been there before and it’s a great option, good vegetarian choices, nice setting, good food.
And of course one of the nicest B&Bs we’ve ever been too – Casa do Lado! Such a wonderful place, comfortable, warm, beautifully decorated, fantastic breakfast, run by fantastic folks. Thank you, Tomás & Co! This is definitely one of the places I will happily visit again. 🙂
Sunday morning saw us indulge in Tomás‘ wonderful breakfast, then we packed our packs for the last time and took the bus to Lisbon. These long distance buses are a bit equivalent to our long distance trains. But newer and cleaer. And this one was on time. 😉
Two weeks passed by like a blur – ready to face the cold and darkness in Berlin again. But we’ll be back.
Overall, this is a very easy long distance hike. No hazards, no navigational challenges, and physically not really demanding. You can make it even easier by booking pack transport. Perfect for beginners or if you are looking for a safe option in Europe late November.
