Roxburgh et al.

Roxburgh is most likely not on the „Top 10 Must See“ map for most tourist guides. We spent a few days here a couple of years ago and liked it very much. And there’s orchards everywhere, so fantastic produce left, right, and center. And blackcurrants. I love blackcurrants. Blackcurrants are the best. Real-fruit blackcurrant ice cream. Real-fruit passionfruit ice cream. Paradise.

We’d rented a house just off the main street, a great pick. Just around the corner from the pharmacy that also serves as a bike repair and rental shop. Or vice versa. Great shop and very knowledgeable folks, great bikes as well. We rented two bikes for a few hours to cycle along the Clutha River on a stretch of the Clutha Gold Trail:

We also walked into the Roxburgh Gorge and cycled a stretch of the Otago Rail Trail. The latter was ok, the former extremely boring.

Roxburgh was extremely good to us – we love you! Next stop: Wanaka.

On our way North to Wanaka we took a little detour to visit St Bathan’s Blue Lake and walked around it. The detour was quite a bit longer than I’d thought but absolutely worth it. Nice cliffs and wonderful reflections on the water. On the way back, we stopped for lunch at the lovely Pitches Store in Ophir. Would never expect this kind of food in such a remote little village, but even in my old age life continues to surprise me. Highly recommended.
